Uncharted (2022)- Movie Review

There are places out there that can't be found on any map. They're not gone, They're just lost - Uncharted (2022)

Uncharted (2022)- directed by Ruben Fleischer. Released back in February, the film adaptation of the popular video game series of the same name Uncharted, was the year's first blockbuster film. Starring Spiderman: No Way Home actor Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, and longtime Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg as Sully, this swashbuckling- adventure film looked to be the first successful video game movie, and what would be the first of many Uncharted films to come. (Potential Spoilers Ahead)

In the past decade, there have been many video games that have been adapted into films. Most of these films were considered extremely lackluster, at best (See Prince of Persia (2010), Assassins' Creed (2016), EVERY RESIDENT EVIL FILM EVER ). However, there have been more successful films in the past few years. 2021 saw a Mortal Kombat reboot which despite poor critical reviews, saw an 83 million dollar profit against its 50 million dollar budget. Furthermore, Angry Birds 2, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Detective Pikachu are the only video games films certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Withstanding this past knowledge of video game films, Uncharted had lots of expectations to meet. Not only from fans and critics alike but also with hopes to recoup the $120 million budget of the film. It seemed Sony Pictures, and Columbia Pictures understood the difficult task at hand. By casting two mega stars in Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, it's clear the company's goal was to cast two actors with as much drawing power as possible, while still hoping to stay as honest to the video game as possible.

The portrayals of Nathan Drake and Sully may differ from the source material, however, the two actors make up for this in their charisma. The duo establishes great on-screen chemistry early in the film. For what the film lacks in plot development and oftentimes cringe-worthy script-writing, it is made up for in the relationship between Holland and Wahlberg. Combine this with some pretty eye-glaring action sequences, such as a fight scene on a flying abandoned pirate ship (yes you read that correctly), Uncharted is definitely a fun time. Even for it its poor critical reception, it is definitely a considerable success for video game films

  2. I got to see Uncharted and I absolutely loved the movie. It was my first movie in theaters of 2022 and it did not disappoint to be honest. It had comedy, action, and a bit of a mystery. I love both actors and I was drawn to it because of them. The chemistry between both actors was undeniable on screen and allowed me to understand the story and stay engaged. It reminded me personally of the show Outerbanks with the mystery and treasure hunt without spoiling too much. It is a great movie and I would recommend to others. Great Post !

  3. My sister actually just recommend this movie to me today. Your review has helped urged me to watch it even more. I am looking forward to it. Mark Wahlberg is one of my favorite actors but he has let me down with some of his recent performances. I am optimistic that he will turn it around here. Thanks Kenny
